Comments: | From Edmunds: Mercedes-Benz offers ever more inventive ways of exploring the spaces between existing car segments, and the 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class is a textbook study. As its three letters suggest, the GLB slots in between the tidy GLA and the larger, pricier GLC, and it's a bit like a middle sibling in between hand-me-downs: too big to be subcompact, not quite large enough for a compact. But the GLB stands apart with distinctive style, its upright boxy shape looking more like the rugged, celebrity-favorite G-wagen (G-Class) than its mainstream counterparts on either side of the product lineup. It's also exceptionally comfortable, suitably luxurious and loaded with appealing technology. The GLB even offers an available third-row seat, which is pretty much unheard of in this class. The seat is cramped to the point of being unusable, but the GLB gets credit for at least offering one. The standard GLB isn't a particularly rousing car to drive, but that all changes this year with the introduction of the high-performance AMG GLB 35. Overall we'd recommend the GLB over its BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40 competitors â just mind the options list lest the reasonable base price spiral out of control. Read on for a deeper dive into the Mercedes-Benz GLB from our Expert Rating team. Performance 8.0/10 How does the GLB-Class drive? In our testing, the GLB 250 reached 60 mph in 6.5 seconds, which is properly quick and at the top of the class. When you stomp the pedal, there's a noticeable delay before it starts accelerating, but with a lighter pedal application, it gets underway smoothly. The GLB isn't particularly exciting to drive, but it is more capable than most SUV owners will need. The GLB's brakes are easy to modulate for smooth stops and impressively strong when you need to make an emergency stop. Around turns, the GLB feels sure-footed and planted. Comfort 8.5/10 How comfortable is the GLB-Class? The optional multi-contour seats with ventilation and heating are comfortable for hours at a time. The massage function doesn't actually massage. Rather, it subtly changes the seatback and cushion angles to shift your contact points, which in theory should help alleviate soreness on long trips. The rear seats are lower and shorter, which means taller passengers will find thigh support lacking, but not by much. The suspension tuning is on the soft side in Comfort mode and easily soaks up road imperfections. It can feel a little floaty on certain broad undulations, but it's far from unsettling. Sport mode dials out that softness without introducing any harshness. The cabin is pleasantly quiet on the highway, even on coarser surfaces. Interior 8.5/10 Howâs the interior? The GLB's ride height and tall door openings make it easy to get in and out of. There's no need to step up or stoop down â just slip on in. Once inside, you'll find that all of the controls are logically placed and, after a very short time, you can operate them without having to take your eyes off the road. The GLB boxy shape affords generous space compared to most of its competitors. Its tall windows provide excellent outward visibility. One minor downside: The sun visors are too small and don't provide full coverage when moved to the side of the vehicle. Technology 8.5/10 Howâs the tech? The GLB gets high marks for its tech features. It comes with Mercedes' MBUX infotainment system and Apple CarPlay and Android Auto smartphone integration. MBUX is the easiest and best system out there, with many ways to control functions. Voice commands are accurate but sometimes take a moment to process. The GLB's driver assist features are particularly good. The adaptive cruise works great whether you're driving in dense highway traffic or cruising on the open highway. The lane-keeping assist system can be a little too aggressive in trying to keep you in the lane, but that situation is pretty rare. Storage 8.0/10 Howâs the storage? The GLB makes good use of its boxy shape when it comes to taking on cargo. It'll accommodate big and bulky objects, and the low liftover height of the cargo floor and the standard power liftgate make loading easier. There are also plenty of places to keep your personal items, with large door pockets and a sizable center bin. Spring-loaded cupholder tabs keep narrow beverages secure too. For family duty, the GLB should work out OK. A rear-facing infant safety seat can fit, but only if you keep the rear seats slid all the way back and the front seats in a reasonable position. We did notice that some car seat bases we tested were a bit hard to latch onto to the GLB's car-seat anchor points. Fuel Economy 7.5/10 Howâs the fuel economy? The EPA estimates fuel economy at 26 mpg in combined city/highway driving, making the GLB slightly more efficient than most class rivals. We observed 26 mpg on our 115-mile evaluation route, which is just a hair lower than expected but still a good result. We suspect the EPA figure should be achievable with a light foot. Value 7.5/10 Is the GLB-Class a good value? The GLB splits the difference between the smaller and more affordable GLA and the slightly bigger and more expensive GLC. It's an appealing option as long as you know what you're getting. Buying one with a ton of options significantly inflates the price, and at that point you should consider the more refined GLC. Compared with other extra-small luxury SUVs, you pay a little more for the GLB, but you also get more in terms of space, performance and comfort. As with most models in this class, the quality of materials feels a bit cheap in some areas, but overall the GLB feels worth its price. Wildcard 8.0/10 The GLB's upright and boxy styling gives it a more traditional and utilitarian SUV look, which we like. Is the GLB fun? No, not really. But that's mostly because we've only tested the GLB 250 so far. With an AMG variant now in the lineup, though, drivers seeking more excitement should be covered. Which GLB-Class does Edmunds recommend? For many drivers, the base GLB 250 (or its 4Matic all-wheel-drive counterpart for slick-weather regions) is a fine choice. But for those of a sporting persuasion, we'd recommend the AMG GLB 35 for its 302-horsepower engine and performance-tuned suspension. It demands a significant price jump but transforms the GLB into a small SUV hot rod. 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB-Class models The 2021 Mercedes-Benz GLB is a small, entry-level luxury SUV with seating for five. An optional third-row of seats expands capacity for two more (very small) passengers. The GLB comes in three trim levels: GLB 250, GLB 250 4Matic and AMG GLB 35. The GLB 250 and GLB 250 4Matic are powered by a turbocharged 2.0-liter four-cylinder engine (221 horsepower, 258 lb-ft of torque) connected to an eight-speed automatic transmission. The GLB 250 is front-wheel-drive, while all-wheel drive comes standard on the 4Matic. The AMG GLB 35 uses a high-performance version of the same engine (302 hp, 295 lb-ft of torque) and eight-speed transmission. All-wheel drive comes standard. - INSTALLED FEATURES: Air filtration: active charcoal, Front air conditioning: automatic climate control, Front air conditioning zones: dual, Rear vents: second row, Airbag deactivation: occupant sensing passenger, Front airbags: dual, Knee airbags: driver, Side airbags: front, Side curtain airbags: front / rear, Antenna type: element, Auxiliary audio input: Bluetooth / USB / iPod/iPhone / memory card slot, Radio: AM/FM / HD radio / touch screen display / voice operated, Radio data system, Speed sensitive volume control, Total speakers: 8, ABS: 4-wheel, Brake drying, Braking assist, Cornering brake control, Electronic brakeforce distribution, Electronic parking brake: auto off, Emergency braking preparation, Front brake diameter: 13.0, Front brake type: ventilated disc, Power brakes, Rear brake diameter: 12.6, Rear brake type: disc, Armrests: rear center folding with pass-thru / rear center with cupholders, Dash trim: aluminum, Door trim: aluminum, Floor mat material: carpet, Floor material: carpet, Floor mats: front / rear, Interior accents: aluminum, Steering wheel trim: leather, Ambient lighting, Assist handle: front / rear, Cargo area light, Cargo cover: retractable, Center console: front console with armrest and storage, Cruise control, Cupholders: front / illuminated / rear, Easy entry: power driver seat, Footwell lights, Memorized settings: 3 driver / driver seat / liftgate / passenger seat / side mirrors, Multi-function remote: keyless entry / panic alarm / trunk release, One-touch windows: 4, Overhead console: front, Power outlet(s): 115V rear / 12V cargo area / 12V front / 12V rear / USB-C front / USB-C rear, Power steering: variable/speed-proportional, Power windows: lockout button, Push-button start, Reading lights: front / rear, Rearview mirror: manual day/night, Steering wheel: tilt and telescopic, Steering wheel mounted controls: audio / cruise control / multi-function / paddle shifter / phone / voice control, Storage: cargo net / cargo tie-down anchors and hooks / door pockets / front seatback / in floor / sunglasses holder, Touch-sensitive controls, Vanity mirrors: dual illuminating, 4WD type: full time, Drive mode selector, Auto start/stop, Battery: maintenance-free, Door handle color: body-color, Exhaust: dual tip / integrated, Exhaust tip color: chrome, Fender lip moldings: black, Front bumper color: body-color, Grille color: black with chrome accents, Mirror color: body-color, Rear bumper color: body-color, Rear spoiler: roofline, Rear spoiler color: body-color, Rear trunk/liftgate: liftgate / power operated, Rocker panel color: black / chrome accents, Window trim: chrome, Connected in-car apps: Google POIs / Google search, Infotainment: MBUX, Infotainment screen size: 7 in., Smartphone integration: Android Auto / Apple CarPlay, Clock, Compass, Digital odometer, External temperature display, Fuel economy display: MPG / range, Gauge: tachometer, Instrument cluster screen size: 7 in., Multi-function display, Trip odometer, Warnings and reminders: coolant temperature warning / lamp failure / low fuel level / low oil pressure / maintenance due, Daytime running lights: LED, Exterior entry lights: approach lamps, Front fog lights, Headlights: LED / auto delay off / auto on/off / wiper activated, Rear fog lights, Taillights: LED, Side mirror adjustments: manual folding / power / reverse gear tilt, Side mirrors: heated / integrated turn signals, Roof rails: aluminum, Automatic emergency braking: front / front pedestrian, Blind spot safety: sensor/alert, Camera system: rear multi-view, Child safety door locks, Child seat anchors: LATCH system, Crumple zones: front / rear, Driver attention alert system, Impact sensor: battery disconnect / door unlock / fuel cut-off / post-collision safety system, Pre-collision warning system: audible warning / pedestrian detection / visual |

2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS 450 - 49,072 mi

Comments: | From Edmunds: Although Mercedes-Benz's GLE, GLC and G-Class SUVs get the lion's share of attention, the venerable 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS is the quiet but capable workhorse of the fleet. Unlike its stablemates, the GLS' roomy interior can carry up to seven adults in plush comfort. You can configure it with power-folding second-row seats for easy access to the third-row seat or, for cargo-carrying versatility, simply fold the seatbacks forward to fit up to 93.8 cubic feet of stuff. For large family duty, only a Sprinter van can do more from the Mercedes family. But there are reasons the GLS doesn't get much hype. Its design is dated, which is most apparent on the technology front. Compared to Mercedes' other new models that feature the brand's latest MBUX infotainment control system, the GLS is still stuck with the older rotary-knob based system. Instead of large and colorful digital displays, you're presented with one display of moderate resolution, a bunch of fiddly buttons and a few knobs. In stark contrast, Audi has been constantly updating its Q7, and BMW has introduced its all-new seven-passenger BMW X7. Some buyers will also hesitate on the GLS' price. Standard equipment is a little underwhelming, so you'll likely need to add a fair number of options to get the GLS up to a suitable level of luxury. But the 2019 GLS' ability to provide massive space and impressive passenger comfort keeps it in the running if you're buying a large luxury SUV. Which GLS-Class does Edmunds recommend? Although the thumping power of the GLS 63 AMG is intriguing, the reality is that most buyers will be best served with the GLS 450. Its turbocharged V6 is powerful enough to haul you and your family of seven over hill and dale. A base-level 450 doesn't have a ton of features, but the price savings compared to the other trims means you can equip it with plenty of extras and still have money left over. 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class models The 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS is a seven-passenger large luxury SUV that's offered in three models. The GLS 450 is the base model that's well-equipped but doesn't include many of the higher-end features you might expect in a luxury SUV. The GLS 550 ups the power and includes many features that are optional on the GLS 450. Finally, performance aficionados will be drawn to the ultra-powerful AMG GLS 63. All three feature standard all-wheel drive. The GLS 450 comes with a turbocharged V6 engine (362 horsepower, 369 pound-feet), 19-inch wheels, a self-leveling air suspension, power-folding and auto-dimming side mirrors, roof rails, a power liftgate, and Mbrace Connect remote vehicle access (via smartphone app, includes remote start). Interior highlights include simulated leather upholstery, heated front seats, a power-adjustable driver's seat, driver-seat memory functions, a power-adjustable steering wheel, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, dual-zone automatic climate control, a 7-inch central display, Bluetooth, a 115-volt household-style power outlet, and a sound system that features dual USB ports. An available Premium package adds keyless entry and ignition, a power front passenger seat with memory settings, lighted doorsills and multicolor ambient lighting, a navigation system, voice controls, a larger 8-inch central display, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, and satellite radio. Lane keeping assist and blind-spot monitoring are also included. The Lighting package bundles adaptive LED headlights and automatic high beams. You can get additional safety features from the Parking Assist package that includes parking sensors, an automated parallel parking system and a surround-view camera system. Also available are three-zone automatic climate control, ventilated front seats, leather upholstery, a 13-speaker Harman Kardon sound system, and multicontour front seats with a massaging feature. The GLS 550 starts with all of the above as standard, but it uses a turbocharged V8 engine (449 hp, 516 lb-ft). It also adds 21-inch wheels, adaptive suspension dampers, sporty exterior styling cues, soft-close doors and upgraded interior trim. Optional items on both the GLS 450 and the GLS 550 include a panoramic sunroof, heated second-row seats, diamond-quilted leather upholstery, and the Driver Assistance package (adaptive cruise control, lane keeping assist, blind-spot monitoring, and front and rear collision mitigation). Also available is an Off-Road package that includes an upgraded multimode terrain selector, a dual-range transfer case and front underbody protection, on the GLS 450, it also adds the GLS 550's standard adaptive dampers. For 2019, a Grand Edition package pads on upgraded leather seating surfaces and, for the GLS 450, a few features that are otherwise optional. The high-performance AMG GLS 63 starts with most of the above and is equipped with an even more powerful turbocharged V8 (577 hp, 561 lb-ft), exclusive 21-inch wheels, a sport-tuned suspension, upgraded brakes, adaptive stabilizer bars (the Active Curve System in Mercedes-speak), AMG-specific styling elements inside and out, enhanced bolstering for the front seats, upgraded leather upholstery, and a flat-bottom sport steering wheel. Other GLS options include a trailer hitch, a heated steering wheel, power-sliding second-row seats for improved third-row access, rear side-window sunshades, a rear entertainment system, a Wi-Fi hotspot and a 14-speaker Bang & Olufsen audio system. - Comments: | From Edmunds: The Mercedes-Benz GLE has been one of the top-rated luxury SUVs on Edmunds. This year, it's been given a full redesign, adding more features, more refinement and greater capabilities. It should come as no surprise that the new 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE will set a new standard. In addition to all of the touches that make a Mercedes special, the GLE gets all of the latest and greatest innovations and upgrades. The MBUX infotainment system is standard on all models and has garnered high praise for its ease of use and cutting-edge tech. There are also plenty of available advanced safety features and driver assistants for added security. For 2020, you can add a third row of seats, and even better, all of these items are available on every GLE model. While most options are available across all powertrains, the only feature you can't get on the GLE 350 and GLE 350 4Matic is the new E-Active Body Control suspension option. If you happen to have a generous budget, it's a game-changer. This suspension leans the vehicle into turns, similar to how a motorcycle does. For passengers, it reduces the sensation of lateral cornering forces, making it feel incredibly sure-footed. But even if you just get the base GLE 350, this Mercedes SUV will easily satisfy with its modern design, impeccable interior and solid construction. If you're in the market for a midsize luxury SUV, the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE should be at the top of your list. Notably, we picked the 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class as one of Edmunds' Best Luxury Cars for this year as well as Edmunds' Top Rated Luxury SUV of 2020. See all of the Top Rated Vehicles on our Best Cars page. Performance 8.0/10 How does the GLE-Class drive? Even the base four-cylinder provides sufficient thrust. The GLE 350 accelerated from 0 to 60 mph in 7.1 seconds in our testing, which is an average time for this class of SUV. Braking performance is likewise strong, and the brakes are easy to modulate in everyday driving. Steering effort is light, but steering is precise, and the GLE stays stable and flat while cornering. The transmission definitely favors economical driving, but shifts are a little harsh for a luxury vehicle, even with only light throttle application. Overall, the GLE is capable and confident, even if it's not meant to be a sporty option. Comfort 7.5/10 How comfortable is the GLE-Class? The GLE's interior is serene and quiet, and the front seats with available massage provide terrific comfort. The rear seats don't slide or recline but remain pleasant for the long haul. Our test vehicle had the optional Acoustic package, and we found it kept exterior sounds well muted. The climate control system is likewise strong. You can just set it and forget it, and the heated and cooled cupholders and the heated armrests are bonuses. The biggest issue we have is the optional air suspension. There's a floatiness at highway speeds that's a little disconcerting plus a lot of extraneous minor body motions. Bumps are impactful, too. We encourage shoppers to drive vehicles with the air and standard suspension back to back. Interior 9.0/10 Howâs the interior? The GLE's cabin is close to perfect, exhibiting excellent usability and build quality that is second to none. It's also quite roomy, with plenty of leg- and headroom for second-row passengers. The driving position offers a commanding view of the road and plenty of adjustability while keeping controls within easy reach. Visibility is excellent, with clear sightlines all around. We like the GLE's intuitive touchpad controller. Functions such as track/preset skipping, home and back are right on the pad, and it has useful haptic feedback. But the steering wheel touchpads are too easy to brush inadvertently. Technology 9.5/10 Howâs the tech? Mercedes new MBUX infotainment system sets a new bar for functionality. It's easy to use and robust to the point you can alter just about every car setting through it. The optional Burmester audio system has a surround-sound option that fully envelops the driver in hi-fi lusciousness. You'll want to crank up every song for an immersive experience ... too bad max volume isn't higher. Another neat feature is the nav system's (optional) augmented reality feature that overlays street names and arrows atop a live front-view video when making turns. For safety, a number of driving aids are standard. Semi-automated driving features are available through the Driver Assistance package. We found the features easy to use, and they helped reduce fatigue in stop-and-go traffic. Storage 8.5/10 Howâs the storage? The GLE's sizable cabin is well-designed. Cubbies and compartments abound for stashing drinks and items. The cargo area is large and flat with no wheelwell intrusion. Max cargo room is among the best in the midsize luxury SUV class. And the GLE's max towing capacity, even with the four-cylinder engine, is similarly strong. The back seat has four easy-to-access car seat anchors, and there's plenty of room for even the bulkiest child safety seats. Fuel Economy 6.5/10 Howâs the fuel economy? The EPA rates the GLE 350 4MATIC at 22 mpg combined (19 city/26 highway), which is average for a base-level midsize luxury SUV. Notably, the GLE 450 gives up only 1 mpg combined and for an extra 100 hp. Value 8.0/10 Is the GLE-Class a good value? You get what you pay for in the GLE, but you will pay quite a lot, with well-optioned models coming in around $70,000. Still, the overall impression of quality is exceptional. The four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty is average, but the same coverage for powertrain is less than what most competitors offer. Wildcard 8.5/10 While the GLE has decent performance chops, it's really the feeling of luxurious quality, in everything from the design to materials to technology features, that sells this SUV. It's far and away the best in class, with several features you won't find in rivals. Pair those with rich, sumptuous materials and you have a cabin second to none. Sure, it's not as sporty to drive as some top competitors, but in most other areas the GLE is setting new benchmarks. Which GLE-Class does Edmunds recommend? Most drivers will find the GLE 350's power more than adequate. Considering that almost all options are available for this base model, it gets our recommendation. For those in cold or rainy climates, the GLE 350 4Matic is a sensible upgrade. For shoppers with deeper pockets, the GLE 450 4Matic with the E-Active Body Control suspension is a marvel of technology. We suggest skipping the optional midgrade Airmatic suspension, however, since it makes the vehicle feel far too floaty and disconnected. 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE-Class models The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLE is available in GLE 350, GLE 350 4Matic, GLE 450 4Matic and GLE 580 4Matic trim levels. They are mostly distinguished by engine choices and all-wheel drive. The GLE has seating for five passengers, or seven if you add the optional third-row seats. The GLE 350 is powered by a 2.0-liter turbocharged four-cylinder (255 horsepower, 273 lb-ft of torque) that is paired with a nine-speed automatic transmission that drives the rear wheels. Mercedes' all-wheel-drive system is available as the GLE 350 4Matic at additional cost. The GLE 450 4Matic comes standard with all-wheel drive and gets a turbocharged 3.0-liter inline six-cylinder (362 hp, 369 lb-ft). It also comes with a 48-volt EQ Boost electrical system that adds 21 hp when needed. The GLE 580 4Matic uses a turbocharged 4.0-liter V8 (483 hp, 516 lb-ft) as well as the EQ Boost system. Standard GLE features include 19-inch wheels, LED headlights, a sunroof, a hands-free liftgate, power-folding mirrors, automatic wipers, keyless ignition and entry, adaptive suspension dampers, an automated parking system, dual-zone automatic climate control, a virtual instrument panel, simulated leather upholstery (MB-Tex), heated front seats, and 40/20/40-split folding rear seats. On the technology front, you get a 12.3-inch touchscreen, the MBUX infotainment system, a navigation system, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, five USB-C ports and HD radio. Standard advanced safety features include emergency communications, forward collision warning and mitigation, a blind-spot monitor with rear cross-traffic alert, a passenger-exit alert system, and a drowsy driver monitoring system. An optional third row of seats is available and comes with powered second-row seats and two additional USB ports. Other bundled options to look out for include the Premium package (a household power outlet, interior ambient lighting, a 13-speaker Burmester surround-sound system, satellite radio, and a wireless charging pad) and the Driver Assist package (adaptive cruise control, active emergency stop assist, lane keeping assist, active lane change assist, frontal cross-traffic alert, a traffic sign reader, and a low-level automated driving system). Comments: | From Edmunds: What's new New GLS Grand Edition option Part of the second GLS generation introduced for 2013 (then called the GL-Class) Although Mercedes-Benz's GLE, GLC and G-Class SUVs get the lion's share of attention, the venerable 2019 Mercedes-Benz GLS is the quiet but capable workhorse of the fleet. Edmunds' Expert Rating Which GLS-Class does Edmunds recommend? - Comments: | From Edmunds: The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS represents a new generation for Benz's biggest luxury hauler. The outgoing Mercedes GLS was getting long in the tooth, especially when compared to models from BMW, Audi and more. But for 2020, it's new, and we mean totally new. For starters, the GLS' chassis is longer and the body more aerodynamic, which translates into more room and a quieter, more efficient ride. And unlike most three-row SUVs, the new GLS can comfortably seat adults in all three rows. It also comes standard with an adjustable air suspension that offers a supple ride. Both of the GLS' available engines are responsive and powerful. All-wheel drive is standard, and when equipped with the Off-Road package, the GLS features true low-range gearing for when the trail gets tough. Few SUVs are as good at combining off-road capability, cargo-carrying flexibility and passenger comfort as the Mercedes-Benz GLS. But the cherry on the cake for 2020? It comes with MBUX, Mercedes' latest infotainment system and one of the best in the business, and envelops passengers in a quiet and comfortable ride. The GLS seals the deal as one of our favorites. Performance 8.5/10 How does the GLS-Class drive? The raw numbers are frankly astounding and, on paper, suggest a much smaller and far sportier vehicle. A 0-60 mph time of 6.2 seconds with the base turbo inline-six is more than adequate. It feels strong too, no matter what situation you're driving in. The engine's mild hybrid system improves both performance and efficiency and makes for super-smooth power delivery. Occasional hiccups from the transmission are our biggest complaint. Stops from 60 mph came in just 105 feet, one of the best results we've seen from any SUV. That's genuine performance-car territory. Part of that is down to the no-cost summer tires, which help provide plenty lateral grip too. The steering is light and makes the GLS easy to maneuver in a parking lot or in traffic. Comfort 8.5/10 How comfortable is the GLS-Class? Mercedes-Benz nailed it when it comes to on-road comfort. The seats are supportive and hugely adjustable, and optional massagers help keep you comfortable after a few hours behind the wheel. The heated and ventilated seats work well, and the automatic climate control quickly evens out cabin temperatures. There's little intrusion from the outside world, with just a bit of road noise on rough pavement. With the optional E-Active Body Control suspension, ride quality is excellent. It's smooth and composed, ironing out most road imperfections without floating or wallowing. Large wheels can hurt ride quality in many SUVs, but our test vehicle with optional 21-inch wheels didn't seem fazed. Interior 9.0/10 Howâs the interior? The GLS' interior is excellent from almost every perspective. The driving position is upright and commanding, but you always feel comfortably ensconced in the GLS. There's plenty of room in all three rows, 6-foot-plus adults can fit comfortably in the easy-to-access third row. The large windows help all-around visibility and make passengers in the rear feel less claustrophobic. The controls are all well placed and easy to reach, but there's a lot of them and the small text means you have to take your eyes off the road until you work up the muscle memory. Separating the seat controls between the door and the infotainment system is a bit frustrating too. Technology 9.5/10 Howâs the tech? Mercedes' infotainment system is a marvel and benchmark for the class even if the learning curve is a bit steep. The navigation system in particular is a standout, and the augmented reality overlay and turn-by-turn directions in the instrument cluster and head-up display are compelling reasons to ditch the apps on your phone. That said, both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto are standard. All three rows have USB-C ports, and a standard wireless charging pad sits in front of the cupholders. The driver aids are equally impressive. The adaptive cruise control is among the best we've tested. In traffic, the system maintains a reasonable gap and can slow the GLS down to a complete stop, then start going again when traffic moves Storage 8.0/10 Howâs the storage? With the seats down, the GLS' cargo area offers up to 84.7 cubic feet of cargo area behind the front seats. Space drops to 17.4 cubes with all the rows upright, which isn't enough to haul luggage for every passenger. Space is decent enough for the class, though the GLS trails the cavernous Navigator, which offers up 103.3 cubic feet behind the front seats. The second and third row seats fold flat and can be dropped with buttons in the hatch. Small-item storage is great, with lots of pockets, bins and cupholders spread throughout the cabin. The GLS 450 is rated to tow 7,700 pounds, which places it ahead of its main rival, the BMW X7. Should towing be a high priority, the Lincoln Navigator is again superior, capable of towing 8,300 pounds. Fuel Economy 8.0/10 Howâs the fuel economy? EPA puts fuel economy at 21 mpg combined (19 city/23 highway), impressive numbers for a vehicle this big and capable. On our evaluation loop, the GLS matched the 21 mpg combined rating. The GLS returned 19 mpg over extended driving distances through mixed traffic and loaded with passengers and cargo. Value 8.0/10 Is the GLS-Class a good value? The GLS isn't cheap, but nothing at this price point can match its impressive build quality. Options can add up quickly, but the GLS is no worse than other luxury SUVs. No other competitor puts together such a well-appointed package for less money. The four-year/50,000-mile bumper-to-bumper warranty is average for the class. Wildcard 8.5/10 The GLS delivers everything you expect from a Mercedes-Benz vehicle. It packs a clean, understated design, and it's loaded with the latest and greatest tech. Luxury vehicles shouldn't make you work, and the engine provides smooth, effortless power. It sounds good too, especially at full acceleration. It's easy to drive and just a generally nice place to spend an hour or 10 behind the wheel. Which GLS-Class does Edmunds recommend? The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class is available in two trims largely differentiated by their engines. While we enjoy the GLS 580's powerful V8 engine, we suggest going for the GLS 450 with its turbocharged inline-six. It delivers more than enough performance and nets better fuel efficiency. It's also generally available with the same standard and optional features. 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class models The 2020 Mercedes-Benz GLS-Class is available in two basic trims: the inline-six (362 horsepower, 369 lb-ft) powered GLS 450 and V8-powered (483 hp, 516 lb-ft) Gls 580. Both engines are paired to a nine-speed transmission and Mercedes' 4Matic all-wheel-drive system. Standard and optional features are largely the same between the two models â the biggest differences come down to price and performance. Standard features on both the GLS 450 and the GLS 580 include Mercedes' new MBUX infotainment system with both Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, a Burmester audio system, nine USB ports spread throughout the cabin, a wireless charging pad, LED lighting, keyless entry and ignition, blind-spot monitoring, active brake assist, and active parking assist with a surround-view camera. Both models come standard with seating for seven, but second-row captain's chairs for a six-seat layout can be had as a no-cost option. The GLS comes well equipped from the start, but Mercedes offers a large list of options, both as individual features or bundled into packages. Highlights include the Convenience Package (four-zone climate control, heated and ventilated front seats), the Driver Assistance Package Plus (adaptive cruise control, active lane-change assist, lane keeping assist and cross-traffic alert) and the Executive Rear Seat Package Plus (heated and ventilated rear seats and wireless charging pad in the rear). E-Active Body Control is a stand-alone option that swaps the GLS' air suspension for a trick active suspension that uses cameras to scan the road ahead and preadjust the suspension accordingly. - INSTALLED FEATURES: Air filtration: active charcoal, Front air conditioning: automatic climate control, Front air conditioning zones: dual, Rear vents: second row, Airbag deactivation: occupant sensing passenger, Front airbags: dual, Knee airbags: driver, Side airbags: front, Side curtain airbags: front / rear / third row, Antenna type: diversity / mast, Auxiliary audio input: Bluetooth / USB / iPod/iPhone / jack / memory card slot, Hard drive: 10GB, In-Dash CD: single disc, Premium brand: Burmester, Radio: AM/FM / HD radio / touch screen display / voice operated, Radio data system, Satellite radio: SiriusXM, Speed sensitive volume control, Surround sound: 5.1, Total speakers: 13, Watts: 590, ABS: 4-wheel, Brake drying, Braking assist, Cornering brake control, Electronic brakeforce distribution, Electronic parking brake: auto off, Emergency braking preparation, Front brake diameter: 14.8, Front brake type: ventilated disc, Front brake width: 1.4, Power brakes, Rear brake diameter: 13.6, Rear brake type: ventilated disc, Rear brake width: 0.9, Regenerative braking system, Armrests: rear center folding with pass-thru / rear center with cupholders, Cargo area floor mat: carpet, Center console trim: wood, Dash trim: wood, Door sill trim: illuminated scuff plate, Door trim: wood, Floor mat material: carpet, Floor material: carpet, Floor mats: front / rear / third row, Interior accents: wood-tone, Steering wheel trim: leather, Active parking system: fully automated, Ambient lighting: color-adjustable, Assist handle: front / rear, Cargo area light, Cargo cover: retractable, Center console: front console with armrest and storage / illuminated, Cruise control, Cupholders: front / rear / third row, Easy entry: power driver seat / power steering wheel, Footwell lights, Memorized settings: 3 driver / driver seat / liftgate / passenger seat / side mirrors / steering wheel, Multi-function remote: panic alarm / proximity entry system / trunk release, One-touch windows: 4, Overhead console: front, Power outlet(s): 115V rear / 12V cargo area / 12V front / 12V rear, Power steering: variable/speed-proportional, Power windows: lockout button, Push-button start, Reading lights: front / rear, Rearview mirror: auto-dimming, Steering wheel: power tilt and telescopic, Steering wheel mounted controls: audio / cruise control / multi-function / paddle shifter / phone / voice control, Storage: cargo tie-down anchors and hooks / door pockets / front seatback, Touch-sensitive controls, Universal remote transmitter: Homelink - garage door opener, Vanity mirrors: dual illuminating, Wireless charging station: front, 4WD type: on demand, Axle ratio: 3.27, Drive mode selector, Auto start/stop, Battery: maintenance-free, Mild hybrid system, Door handle color: body-col |
